Atelier, london

The structure provides a dedicated Atelier, thoughtfully positioned on the unused side of the residence. This ground-level, single-volume structure creates a seamless connection between the front and back of the property, utilizing its west elevation to enhance accessibility and flow throughout the site.

Conversation between Nature and Architecture.

An integral aspect of this design is the connection to two magnificent Plane trees that grace the property. Affectionately named ‘Kane’ for the tree at the front and ‘Abel’ for the one at the rear, these trees have profoundly influenced the architectural vision for the Atelier. Their presence has inspired a design that acknowledges the relationship between the structure, the house, and the surrounding landscape, establishing a conversation between nature and architecture.

The extension aims to reconcile the connection between the two sides of the house—by creating both a physical and conceptual link. The design seeks to celebrate this relationship, fostering an environment that honours the beauty and significance of the trees while serving its practical function as a workspace.

One of the most striking features of the proposed Atelier is its saw-toothed, fan-shaped roof. This geometric form not only connects the two sides of the building but also opens up to the north and south, allowing for optimal visibility of both trees. Vertical openings incorporated into the design will invite natural daylight to flood the interior space, enhancing the connection to the outdoors. The roof surfaces are elegantly mirrored, reflecting both horizontally and on the sloping faces inside and out. This clever design choice ensures that the vertical clerestory windows provide unobstructed views of Kane and Abel while allowing their reflections to inhabit the space, creating an architectural dialogue.

Boundless Reflections

The use of mirrored cladding further transforms the Atelier, enabling the surrounding environment to be reflected on its surfaces. This not only enhances the natural beauty of the existing landscape but also allows the Atelier to visually merge with its context, creating a dynamic interplay between the building and its natural surroundings.

Internally, the experiences of space and light during daylight hours promises to be nothing short of mesmerizing. As the sun moves across the sky, its changing angles create a kinetic dance of light on the walls and floors. This phenomenon can be likened to a vibrant light canvas installation by Peter Sedgley, where light itself becomes an essential medium. The mirrors within the interior will also yield boundless fractal reflections, akin to the captivating sculptures created by Monir Farmanfarmaian, thus infusing the space with a sense of wonder and artistry.

Given the complexity of the Atelier’s form and the necessity for structural integrity, the design incorporates steel as a fundamental element. This choice will establish a composite structure with the plywood roof decking, ensuring both strength and flexibility. Since all steel members and connections will be concealed behind the finishes, it was imperative to implement a maintenance-free corrosion protection system to preserve the aesthetic and functional durability of the building.

The intricacies of the connections resulting from the organic geometry called for a reliable solution, leading to the decision to employ a hot-dipped galvanized coating. This approach not only provides an effective protective barrier but also enhances the elegance of the galvanized structure. The beauty of this solution is such that it has been photographed for record-keeping, capturing the architectural elegance of the Atelier.

Environment for Creativity and Collaboration.

In conclusion, this Atelier represents a harmonious blend of architecture and nature, drawing inspiration from the iconic Plane trees that define its context. With its innovative design, the project seeks to foster a unique workspace that celebrates light, space, and the beauty of the natural environment, all while standing as a testament to the principles of modern architecture and sustainability. It embodies a vision that not only fulfils practical needs but also enriches the experience of those who interact with the space, creating an inspiring environment for creativity and collaboration.
