This year, Matthew Wells, Director at Techniker, Jan-Carlos Kucharek, Deputy Editor at RIBA Journal, Jerome Wren of Carmody Groarke, and Iqbal Johal from the Galvanizers Association will collectively ensure that every project is considered through multiple lenses; design intent, technical performance, and long-term durability.

Railway Experience Landscape, Putbus

  • Putbus, Germany
Anyone stepping off the train in Putbus does not arrive at an ordinary provincial station. Instead, the journey begins with a step back in time for railway enthusiasts. The “Racing Roland”, one of the last historic narrow-gauge railways operating within Germany’s regular public transport network, has shaped the character of the island of Rügen for more than a century.

Ardgowan Distillery in Scotland

  • Inverkip, Scotland
Set within the Ardgowan Estate at Inverkip, the new Ardgowan Distillery brings together ambitious whisky production, visitor experience and striking steel architecture. Designed as a landmark building in an exposed countryside setting, the project shows how hot dip galvanizing can provide both architectural expression and long-term protection for fully exposed structural steelwork.

Haus L

  • Rhineland, Germany
What appears at first glance to be a residence from 1980s Florida is, in fact, a contemporary home located in the quiet Rhineland. Haus L combines a minimalist, geometric aesthetic with distinctive accents and a subtle tropical character. A sophisticated solar shading system serves not only a practical purpose but also acts as a defining architectural feature.

DRIFT, Demountable Pavilion in Belfast

  • Belfast, Northern Ireland
Created for Belfast 2024, DRIFT is a demountable floating pavilion designed to bring public life onto the River Lagan through sound, movement and immersion. Developed as a reusable structure for an exposed river environment, the project demonstrates how hot dip galvanizing and carefully coordinated steel detailing can support adaptability, durability and long-term protection in low-impact civic architecture.

Industria High Density Development

  • London
Industria, in Barking and Dagenham, represents an ambitious approach to modern industrial space design and is the first light industrial scheme of its kind in the UK. On a tight brownfield site in the River Road Employment Area, Haworth Tompkins and Ashton Smith Associates, working with Be First, have created the UK’s first multi-storey light-industrial scheme of its kind.

Harzer Hexenreich Observation Tower

  • Germany
In the Thuringian area of the Harz Mountains, a new symbol has risen: the Harzer Hexenreich, a roughly 70m high observation tower near Ellrich. Its striking form, an oversized witch’s broom, draws on regional mythology while signalling a clear commitment to durable construction using steel and high-quality corrosion protection.

The Sentinel Steel Observation Tower

  • Suffolk
Housestead is a low-impact, self-built rural dwelling conceived by its owner-architects as a prototype for regenerative estate-based living. Within the protected landscape of the Suffolk Coast & Heaths (AONB/SSSI), the project reclaims a remote site by reworking familiar rural typologies into a precise cruciform plan of four elemental volumes: Living, Sleeping, Working and Utility.
