More Than Just a Façade

The architecture of this innovation centre is giving a new dimension to a campus where lecture theatres once focused primarily on teaching theory. At Saarland University, the sounds of fabrication, welding and prototype development have become part of everyday life.

The Innovation Center provides an architectural setting for this new culture of experimentation. From a distance, the building immediately stands out through the interplay of matt black aluminium panels and hot dip galvanized steel sheet. Yet the shimmering metal envelope is far more than just a façade. It defines a place where students, researchers and regional businesses come together under one roof.

A Dynamic Building Envelope

The building envelope immediately attracts attention across the campus, demonstrating how innovation centre architecture can use material contrast to create a distinctive architectural identity.

The façade is composed of large-format panels, with aluminium and hot dip galvanized steel sheets creating an interplay of different scales, light and dark surfaces, and shimmering and matt finishes.

The aluminium panels were anodised, while the hot dip galvanized steel sheets were deliberately left without additional surface treatment, in keeping with the building’s raw material concept. This allows the galvanized coating to retain its characteristic surface appearance and develop naturally over time as it is exposed to the atmosphere.

At the same time, hot dip galvanizing provides durable corrosion protection, protecting the steel substrate against atmospheric exposure and contributing to a long service life with minimal maintenance requirements.

The panels are arranged in an apparently random sequence and project slightly forwards and backwards across the depth of the façade. This irregular composition, combined with the contrasting appearance of the two metals, creates a dynamic building envelope that draws attention towards the activities taking place inside.

The Aesthetics of Unfinished Materials

Inside, the building provides flexible spaces for seminars, exhibitions and interaction with investors, together with two fully equipped workshops where ideas can be developed directly into prototypes and small production runs. To reinforce the character of the building as a place of experimentation and fabrication, the architects adopted an honest and restrained material palette. Additional decorative finishes were largely avoided. Concrete remains exposed, timber is simply oiled, and hot dip galvanized steel is expressed through the natural appearance of its zinc coating. The characteristic surface of the galvanized steel becomes part of the architectural language of the building, combining the functional benefits of long-term corrosion protection with the visual qualities of an industrial material left deliberately exposed.

Contrast Through Deliberate Interventions

The interplay of materials continues throughout the working areas.

Floors within the public zones are finished with oiled industrial parquet, while ceilings and walls largely retain their exposed concrete surfaces. In keeping with this industrial architectural language, the majority of the staircase balustrades and guarding are fabricated from hot dip galvanized steel.

Carefully selected interventions introduce contrast and give the interior spaces greater visual intensity. A limited number of walls are smoothly finished and painted white, while furniture in a distinctive shade of green deliberately interrupts the otherwise restrained material palette.

These contrasting elements heighten the visual impact of the exposed materials and reinforce the relationship between raw surfaces, industrial fabrication and contemporary architectural expression.
