In Hampstead, Reciprocal House extends one of Norman Foster’s earliest built works with an architecture that is both respectful and quietly radical. Framed by a restrained material palette and a close reading of site, the project uses galvanized steel not as an isolated technical gesture, but as part of a wider strategy of privacy, lightness and continuity.

Extending an Early Foster Work
Some projects begin with a blank site. Reciprocal House began with something far more delicate: the legacy of an existing building and the question of how to continue its story without imitation. Located in Hampstead, London, the house retains Norman Foster’s 1968 extension to a former coach house behind a pub,one of the earliest built works by Foster Associates and an important example of the directness, economy and structural clarity that would come to define the practice.
Rather than treating that surviving fragment as a relic, the new project uses it as a point of departure. The original coach house is replaced, while Foster’s extension is retained, resulting in what is effectively an extension of the extension. This is less an act of replication than one of architectural evolution: a careful continuation that acknowledges history while allowing the building to adapt to new demands.
A House Shaped by Its Context
The central idea behind Reciprocal House is that architecture should be “locally adapted” to its surroundings in much the same way a species evolves in response to its environment. That concept gives the project an unusually forensic relationship with site. Rather than imposing a preconceived form, the design emerges from close analysis of light, outlook, privacy and enclosure.
The result is a house that embraces fresh air, framed views and daylight while negotiating the tight urban conditions of its setting. New accommodation is arranged across basement, ground, first and second floors, with angled facades and roof forms that echo elements of the earlier building without slipping into nostalgia. The architecture is measured and controlled, but never static. It is shaped by the dialogue between what has been kept, what has been removed and what has been newly made.
That layered condition gives the project much of its depth. The retained Foster extension, the demolished coach house and the new intervention together create a conversation across time, one that speaks of continuity, reinvention and respect for architectural history.
A Deliberately Limited Palette
One of the most compelling aspects of the project is its disciplined material language. Rather than relying on contrast for effect, Reciprocal House builds its character through a tightly edited palette: exposed concrete, perforated aluminium and galvanized steel. This restraint is entirely in keeping with the spirit of Foster’s original intervention, but it also gives the new work its own calm authority.
The concrete structure is optimised and left exposed, reinforcing the sense of constructional honesty that underpins the design. Views out are filtered and modulated rather than simply opened up, creating a nuanced relationship between interior life and the surrounding context. Privacy is not treated as a defensive necessity but as an architectural condition to be carefully shaped.
Within that strategy, galvanized steel plays a particularly important role.
Galvanized Steel as Structure, Screen and Surface
Here, galvanized steel is not in the foreground. Its success lies in the way it works across several scales and functions at once. It forms the framework to the project’s sail-like roof elements, contributes to the roof terrace decking and balustrades, and is used again as grating to the basement light wells. In each case, it performs a different task, but always within the same broader architectural language.
The sail-like roofs are perhaps the most evocative expression of this approach. Working alongside perforated aluminium, their galvanized steel framework helps filter views, temper exposure and preserve privacy, while also retaining a subtle memory of the site’s earlier roofscape. These elements are neither purely formal nor purely technical: they act as mediators between old and new, openness and enclosure, domestic occupation and the wider city beyond.
On the roof terrace, galvanized steel lends the project a sense of precision and lightness. Used for decking and balustrades, it reinforces the architectural idea of veiled occupation a way of inhabiting the upper levels without sacrificing the project’s overall restraint. In the basement light wells, galvanized grating performs a more utilitarian role, but one no less important: bringing durability and visual consistency to those harder-working edges of the house.
Material Choice in Architectural Context
What makes the use of galvanized steel so convincing at Reciprocal House is that it is entirely contextual. It belongs to the project’s wider way of thinking. This is a house concerned with adaptation, with careful calibration. Galvanized steel supports that ambition because it offers robustness, refinement, and a surface character that feels at ease alongside concrete and aluminium.
It also sits naturally within the project’s conversation with Foster’s early work. The 1968 extension was notable for its lightness, clarity and economy of means, and those same qualities are reinterpreted here in contemporary form. The galvanized elements do not attempt to mimic the older building, but they share its belief in straightforward construction and limited means used intelligently.
Reinvention with Precision
Ultimately, Reciprocal House is a project about reciprocity in the fullest sense. It responds to site, to history, to an existing architectural language and to the practical demands of contemporary domestic life. Its achievement lies in the delicacy of that response. Nothing feels overplayed. Instead, the architecture is composed through calibration, restraint and a deep understanding of how materials can shape experience.
Within that framework, galvanized steel helps give form to the roofscape, defines edges and thresholds, and contributes to the project’s sense of crafted toughness. More importantly, it does so as part of a coherent architectural idea in which permanence and adaptation are held in careful balance.
