Connecting
with nature
The office structure has been meticulously crafted to fulfil the client’s specific brief while ensuring a seamless integration with its natural surroundings. This design approach places significant emphasis on accessibility, offering a functional year-round workspace tailored for users who rely on wheelchairs. The result is a thoughtfully conceived environment that prioritizes inclusivity, allowing all individuals to engage comfortably within the space and its surroundings.
Embracing traditional vernacular architecture, the office incorporates materials that are not only aesthetically pleasing but are also commonly found in the local area. Specifically, the design utilizes materials typically associated with agricultural settings. This intentional choice reflects a deep connection to regional identity and culture, showcasing the beauty of local resources. By leveraging these materials, the design upholds a commitment to sustainability, as it minimizes the ecological footprint by reducing the need to transport materials from distant locations.
Occupying a total of 30 m² of carefully planned floor space, the building is strategically positioned on the edge of a sloped bank. This placement not only enhances the visual appeal of the structure but also ensures that it sits modestly within the landscape, contributing to its natural beauty. Wheelchair access is thoughtfully integrated at the rear, providing a smooth transition into the workspace.
The structure features a completely galvanized exterior, which extends to include the rainwater management system and cladding. The decision to use galvanized materials is pivotal; a batch galvanized steel frame supports the building and rolling galvanized shutters can securely enclose the office when it is not in use, providing an added layer of protection against inclement weather and potential intrusion.
In stark contrast to the resilient, rugged exterior, the interior of the office embraces a warm and inviting aesthetic, characterized by a light-filled timber construction.
The interior features beautifully panelled walls and a carefully crafted birch plywood ceiling, creating an atmosphere that is both comforting and inspiring. Natural light floods the space through strategically placed windows, offering a bright and uplifting work environment. This connection to the exterior also reinforces the sense of tranquility and focus that can be found within a woodland setting.
The central area of the office is intentionally designed with minimal furnishings, allowing for unobstructed movement throughout the space. This thoughtful layout facilitates the free navigation of wheelchair users and ensures that all occupants feel comfortable and at ease. The minimalist approach to furnishings also encourages creativity and flexibility, allowing for various configurations to suit different working styles or collaborative efforts.
Overall, this office exemplifies a thoughtful and intentional approach to design that harmonizes accessibility, sustainability, and a profound connection to the landscape. By prioritizing the needs of all users while respecting the natural environment, the structure not only functions as a workspace but also stands as a testament to the values of inclusivity and responsible design. It creates an inviting atmosphere that fosters productivity, creativity, and well-being.
