Sculptural Skin
In Berlin’s Gropiusstadt, a neighbourhood long seen as the embodiment of 1960s functional housing estates, a new building is redefining what integration means — socially, urbanistically, and architecturally.
Designed by AFF Architekten, the Centre for Language and Movement (ZSB) brings fresh energy to the Efeuweg campus, an educational hub in the heart of Neukölln. Instead of aiming for architectural spectacle, the design focuses on connection — uniting education, culture, sport, and gastronomy beneath one expressive roofscape.
The buildings distinctive hot dip galvanized steel skin forms a sculptural envelope that flows continuously from roof to façade. The gable-like silhouettes echo familiar roof forms while abstracting them into a modern campus landmark. The result is a structure that feels both grounded in its surroundings and distinctly contemporary.
Material authenticity and longevity take centre stage. The architects chose galvanized steel for its robustness and reflective qualities — a material that ages gracefully, requires minimal maintenance, and lend the building a tactile honesty.
Inside, the tone softens: exposed concrete, linoleum flooring, and large wooden doors create calm, human-scaled spaces that balance openness with intimacy. This equilibrium between durability and warmth earned the ZSB recognition at the 2025 German Galvanizing Awards, where the jury praised its clarity, coherence, and sensitivity to context.
Video-Interview
We sit down with architect Sascha Schulz for an exclusive look behind the scenes of the project. He reveals the story behind the building’s distinctive design and how thoughtful architecture can harmonise new structures with their surroundings to form a cohesive whole.
